Material decision

Copper

Copper is the most expressive of the four materials: warm and reflective when new, progressively darker as it oxidises, and capable of developing a green patina over a much longer period. It suits work where longevity, formability and architectural character justify the initial cost.

KME states that professionally installed TECU products can last at least the life of the building. Copper has a documented architectural service life exceeding 100 years, subject to detailing, exposure and installation.

Product-specific. Warranty terms vary by product and manufacturer; obtain the current written terms for the selected KME TECU or Nordic Copper product.

How the surface develops

Bright copper moves through warm brown and deep oxide tones. Aurubis notes that natural copper roofs in Central Europe may take 75–90 years to become fully green; façades can take longer.

Best considered for

Landmark roofs, heritage work, crafted residential details, complex forms and façades where natural weathering is part of the design intent.

Why choose it

Distinctive living surface with factory-aged options available.
Highly workable for curves, details, flashings and bespoke forms.
Long-lived when the complete build-up and interfaces are correct.
Copper is repeatedly recyclable without loss of material quality.

Where it can catch you out

Usually the highest initial material cost in this group.
Weathering speed and colour vary by aspect, exposure and environment.
Run-off can stain porous stone, concrete and similar materials.
Copper must be isolated correctly from less noble metals to avoid galvanic corrosion.

Natural & pre-weathered titanium zinc

Material decision

Zinc

Zinc gives a refined, low-gloss surface and is exceptionally adaptable to standing seam, flat-lock, curved and folded work. Its protective patina is part of both the appearance and durability, but the correct build-up, ventilation strategy and manufacturer details matter.

RHEINZINK estimates an approximate 75-year technical service life where the roof structure is properly planned and the material is correctly processed by a specialist.

Manufacturer warranty positionUp to 50 years

VMZINC publishes a 50-year material warranty for eligible projects installed through a VMZINC atWORK contractor. RHEINZINK separately publishes a 40-year material guarantee. Terms are not interchangeable.

How the surface develops

Natural zinc gradually becomes matt grey. Pre-weathered surfaces give an established tone from day one while continuing to change subtly with exposure.

Best considered for

Contemporary roofs and façades, complex junctions, dormers, bay windows, heritage forms and projects needing a restrained living finish.

Why choose it

Elegant matt appearance in natural and pre-weathered finishes.
Protective patina can make light surface scratches less visible over time.
Highly formable for complex geometry and traditional hard-metal details.
Long service potential with relatively low routine maintenance.

Where it can catch you out

Warranty depends on the exact product, build-up, detailing and installer route.
Poor ventilation or incompatible substrates can undermine performance.
Finish variation, rolling direction and batch consistency must be managed.
New material needs correct transport and dry storage to prevent staining.

Material decision

Aluminium

Aluminium is light, corrosion-resistant and available in a wide range of controlled colours. It is particularly useful where structural weight, colour consistency, refurbishment constraints or a crisp contemporary finish drive the decision.

Architectural aluminium has documented external service beyond a century; the aluminium-clad dome of San Gioacchino in Rome dates from 1897 and remains an extant reference. Actual service life depends on the system, finish, exposure and detailing.

Manufacturer warranty positionVaries

Warranty terms vary by product and manufacturer. PREFA publishes guarantees of up to 40 years for eligible products and P.10 surfaces, subject to the exact product, colour, certificate and current conditions.

How the surface develops

A coated finish is selected for a controlled colour rather than a living patina. PREFA lists a broad P.10 palette, but physical samples—not screens or approximate RAL references—should make the final decision.

Best considered for

Roof and façade refurbishments, weight-sensitive structures, colour-led designs, long trays, contemporary homes and coordinated envelope systems.

Why choose it

Very low installed material weight compared with many roof coverings.
Broad colour range with coordinated roof, façade and accessory systems.
Formable at low temperatures and suited to curves and complex roof forms.
PREFALZ is classified A1 non-combustible and aluminium is recyclable.

Where it can catch you out

Guarantee coverage varies by product and finish; a certificate is required.
Scratches, dents and site handling damage can remain visible on coated material.
Batch, gloss and metallic colour variation must be controlled with samples.
Expansion, fixing and panel length still require specialist design and installation.

Stainless steel

Architectural stainless offers high strength, corrosion resistance and several very different aesthetics. Tin-coated products such as UGINOX Patina weather towards a muted matt surface; decorative producers such as Rimex offer textured and coloured finishes for a different design brief.

A conservative architectural service-life position; the Chrysler Building’s stainless-steel roof, installed in 1930, remains a documented long-service reference. Exact life depends on grade, coating, exposure and detailing.

Warranty terms differ by manufacturer, product, grade and application. Use the current written terms for the selected UGINOX, Roofinox or specialist stainless-steel system.

How the surface develops

Modern products often described as terne-coated may use a lead-free, pure-tin coating. UGINOX Patina slowly develops a matt finish; Roofinox TIN describes a roughly two-to-three-year patination process.

Best considered for

Durable roofs and flashings, heritage-style muted grey work, demanding details and selected decorative façade or interior applications.

Why choose it

High strength and corrosion resistance with relatively thin material.
Tin-coated options soften the natural stainless-steel lustre.
Suitable grades can offer a long, low-maintenance service life.
Textured, coloured and patterned specialist finishes expand the design range.

Where it can catch you out

The grade must match coastal, industrial and other environmental exposure.
Patination can vary and may be less even on vertical surfaces.
Tin-coated roofing and decorative Rimex finishes are not interchangeable systems.
Fabrication, soldering, protection and finish direction require product-specific care.
